German Nationwide Semester Ticket as a Chipcard

Students at Technische Universität Berlin who do not own a smartphone or whose smartphone is not compatible with the S-Bahn Berlin app can receive the Deutschlandsemesterticket as a chip card. The amount of available Chip Cards are limited to 1% of all students of the TU Berlin.

A chip card from the previous semester is not automatically renewed. If you would like to continue using a chip card, you must submit a new application for the new semester.

Who can receive a Chipcard?

A chip card can be requested if:

  • you do not own a smartphone, or
  • your smartphone is not compatible with the S-Bahn Berlin app.

If you own a compatible smartphone but simply do not want to use the digital version of the ticket, you cannot freely choose between a mobile ticket and a chip card.

Is your Phone incompatible?

First, check whether you can update your smartphone:

  • iOS: Version 16.7 or later
  • Android: Version 8 or later

If your smartphone can be updated to one of these versions, you can apply for the Deutschlandsemesterticket as a regular digital ticket through S-Bahn Berlin.

If it is not possible to update your smartphone to the required version, your smartphone is considered incompatible. In this case, you can apply for a chip card.

This show you submit the application

If you meet the requirements, please submit the following documents:

  • the fully completed application form for the chip card
  • your fee notice as proof of your eligibility for the ticket
  • your current enrollment certificate

You can find the fee notice in the TU Portal, where your enrollment documents are made available.

Please send us the documents by one of the following methods:

  • by mail
  • via the upload tool
  • by encrypted email

What happens next?

We will first check whether your application is complete. Your data will then be forwarded to S-Bahn Berlin, and the chip card will be ordered.

Processing may take some time, especially at the beginning of the semester.

S-Bahn Berlin will then check whether a digital semester ticket has already been activated under your matriculation number. If this is not the case, the chip card will be produced and sent to the responsible office at TU Berlin.

Once the chip card has arrived, you will be notified and can collect it during the specified collection hours.

Important: By applying for a chip card, your ability to use the digital ticket will be blocked.

If you are exempted from paying for or using the semester ticket during the semester, the exemption for months that have not yet begun may only be processed after the chip card has been returned.
