€1,000 “Studienstarthilfe” for some students from October 2024! Deadline is November

From the winter semester 24/25 there will be a study start-up grant (Studienstarthilfe). Eligible students can receive financial support to start their studies. The amount is a one-off lump sum of €1,000 and does not have to be repaid and is not offset against social benefits (Sozialleistungen). It can be applied for from September.

Unfortunately, there is a tight deadline for the application. The application must be submitted by the end of the month following the start of training. This means that if you start your studies in October, you must submit your application by November 30 at the latest. The study start-up grant can only be applied for online via BAföG Digital.

Prerequisites:

  • First-time enrollment at a university in Germany, in an EU member state or in Switzerland
  • Applicants must not have reached the age of 25 at the start of the study period
  • Receipt of certain social benefits in the month before the start of training

Social benefits that entitle you to study start-up assistance:

  • Kinderzuschlag according to the Federal Child Benefit Act
  • Bürgergeld (formerly Hartz IV)
  • Wohngeld (yourself or as a household member)
  • Benefits under the Asylum Seekers Benefits Act (Asylbewerberleistungsgesetz)
  • Hilfe zum Lebensunterhalt (SGB XII, Chapter 3)
  • Basic income support in the event of reduced earning capacity (Grundsicherung) (SGB XII, Chapter 4)
  • Benefits for living expenses according to § 93 and § 145 paragraph 1 of the Fourteenth Book of the Social Code („Leistungen nach dem Sozialen Entschädigungsrecht zum Lebensunterhalt“)
