These department initiatives (sometimes called 'Fachschaften' at other universities) are formed by students dedicated to the cause of supporting their fellow students. They volunteer for various activities, organising freshers' support and excursions at the end of the semester, lending old tests / exams, organising student cafés, and also representing the interests of students within the so-called academic self-administration (the 'studentische Selbstverwaltung') like the institutes council ('Institutsrat') or the department council ('Fakultätsrat').
Especially this last point makes these initiatives an important contact for you: They are the first to turn to if you have a serious conflict with a lecturer or the administration, or if your required courses overlap, and your problem cannot be solved just by talking to the person in question. Apart from such conflicts, the initiatives are a place to meet fellow students from your department, get help with your course work and test preparation, and also a find some peace and quiet within the often hectic world of the TU.
But initiatives need support. Your support!
With little effort, you can help the other students of your department massively, for example when you make sandwiches during the freshers' welcome, show them around the campus, act as contact person during a break between lectures and open the initiative's room, or take care of the lending of old exam papers.
You will get a lot in return...
not only the gratefulness of your fellow students, and the certainty you did something positive, but you will also find friendship, you will learn a lot about the university, and how to engage in it, about people and, most of all, about yourself. And you will acquire the so-called soft skills which are so rare in your tight curriculum.
